Birds chirped in an odd sort of drowsy state and the sun was weak, obscured by many, many clouds. The snow lay thick on the earth, even in the clearing that WindClan called home. In the centre of the clearing was a pitiful pile of dead creatures, a scrawny rabbit and a morsel of a bird and beside it crouched a tiny tortoiseshell she-cat, her claws were out and she watched the sky carefully, she would protect the pitiful supply of food with claw and fang, for tiny though she was she had more fight that burned inside her small frame than most cats showed in the heat of battle, this was Harestar the cat who had been selected by the previous leader, Whitestar to lead WindClan after his death and the little cat took her job seriously with a proud sort of hostility.
Her bones were aching from the cold and they protested dully as she arose from her position beside the fresh kill, looking down she considered the pieces for a moment before looking around at the camp, there was snow caught on the roofs of the dens, her own den was blocked by the horrid cold substance as she had been out all afternoon, guarding the food and the snow had fallen. Now upright the small leader shook herself to dislodge the snow caught in her fur, she would have to set another guard for the food, in leafbare they could never be too careful, all animals were hungry, including the hawks and the small store would be enough to attract unwanted attention.
Odd eyes cast around the clearing, she needed a guard and then some cats to send out hunting, the Clan needed food in a large way. Bringing the bird to Sparrowstep would be a good move also… the she-cat’s mind whirred as she slipped into leader mode, trying to decide what needed to be done and when, organising the patrols was, of course, Sageflower’s job but Harestar had always been unconventional and opted to taking at least partial responsibility for hunting in leafbare, sending cats out when needed to take the heat off of the other she-cat in the season which was the most stressful for a deputy. She stretched, she might go out herself if there weren’t other matters to attend to. | |
